Data collection standards project (Victoria)

Background

In 2006, EPHC confirmed the Data Collection Standards Project as a priority project of the CNHA to be led by Victoria.

In September 2007, HCOANZ identified four datasets that could be collected relatively quickly.

HCOANZ agreed that further datasets, such as information on heritage website usage, may be added to the project once reporting on the first four datasets is established practise.

The data provided here has been supplied by all States, Territories and the Commonwealth using available data for the period up to the end of the 2007/08 financial year. The data is provided as Attachments 1-4 above.

Key preliminary findings from the available data (until 30 June 2008) are:

15,433 places are included on Commonwealth, State and Territory registers. 213 places were added to registers in the 2007/08 financial year.
The most commonly ascribed value to places on registers is HERCON Criterion D (Importance in demonstrating the principal characteristics of a class of cultural or natural places or environments), followed by HERCON Criterion G (Strong or special association with a particular community or cultural group for social, cultural or spiritual reasons).
The most common type of registered place is private residential buildings. Waste utilities are the least commonly registered place type.
There are well in excess of 118,000 identified locally significant heritage places in Australia.
Heritage place owners have applied for in excess of $284 million worth of grant funding since 1 July 2004. Approximately $39 million of grant funding has been available in the same period ($ demand being approximately 7.2 times that of available grant funding).
34% of eligible projects received grant funding. The most funded projects were in regional areas.
Since 1999 an average of 12.1% of all overnight visitors throughout Australia are traveling for cultural-related activities. 38.7% of these visit museums and/or art galleries. 35.2% visit historical/heritage buildings, sites and monuments.

Certain information is not currently collected by agencies as part of normal operation.
